Selecting heating/cooling

Selecting heating and cooling for your house is a big decision that has an impact on both the value of your house as well as determining how much it will cost you in utility bills.

The two big players in the game are split system or ducted systems. Before I started I didn't really understand the difference so here is a brief overview of  what they are about.

Split System

(Info from Lookforthetick)
The most common residential split-system air conditioner is an air conditioning unit made up of two units — an outside unit, the compressor, and an inside air outlet unit, usually referred to as the “wall hung head unit”. The two units are connected by pipes that carry refrigerant. An alternative to the standard unit is the multi-split system, which has multiple indoor units connected to a single outdoor unit. A split-system air conditioner can be used for cooling and heating.

Ducted System

(Info from Daikin)
Ducted air conditioning provides climate controlled comfort throughout your entire home. They can be installed in a new home or tailored to suit an existing one. The indoor unit is located within the ceiling or under the floor, with flexible ducting distributing conditioned air through vents located in chosen areas throughout the house. The condensing unit is located outside the house.

When making our decision we realised that although the ducted would be a lot more expensive, it would be more beneficial in the long run as it adds more value to the home when we decide to sell or rent. The split system also wasn't going to work for us due to the size of our open plan living room/kitchen. We were told that the unit would need to be running at full capacity for it to heat/cool the entire house and that's not good for the unit as well as increasing our electricity bill by a lot.

We don't have gas connected to the house so this wasn't a consideration for us.

In terms of choosing an installation company, get quotes from a number of different companies, we found that there was a big price difference between them I think this was due to the fact that they sold different brands of units eg. Daikin, Samsung etc.
